Exercise Physiology & Exercise Classes

Exercise Physiologists are professionals who specialise in the field of health and fitness, offering exercise testing and prescription to assist with the management and prevention of chronic health conditions, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and medical conditions.  Exercise physiologists also specialise in the development of functional exercise programs designed to return injured workers (Workers Compensation/CTP patients) back to suitable work duties. Our practice is a purpose built rehabilitation centre consisting of a fully equipped gym and indoor heated deep water hydrotherapy pool.

What conditions can exercise physiology be helpful for?
Our experienced exercise physiologists specialise in developing and implementing exercise programs for patients with chronic conditions including:

  • Musculoskeletal Injury
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Diabetes (Type 1 and 2)
  • Arthritis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hypertension
  • Dyslipidaemia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Asthma; and many more.

Exercise Physiology for Workers Compensation NSW/CTP Patients

WorkCover accredited Exercise Physiologists have the clinical skills and knowledge to develop exercise based rehabilitation programs designed to return injured workers back to suitable work duties. This includes specific exercise therapy related to the worker’s injury and work demands, and/or specific work activities as exercise.

Specialising within the NSW Workers Compensation and CTP systems, our exercise physiologists provide exercise based rehabilitation to injured workers or CTP patients who are in the sub-acute (>4weeks) or chronic (>12weeks) stage of their injury. Such patients may not have responded to ‘hands on treatment’ or have progressed to a functional exercise program as the next step in their rehabilitation from a workplace/ MVA injury.

What should I expect when I see an exercise physiologist?

Following a comprehensive fitness and musculoskeletal assessment, exercise prescription will be tailored to suit your individual needs. Through an exercise program, our exercise physiologists will help you achieve your fitness or rehabilitation goals with a focus on equipping you with the skills to maintain appropriate physical activity habits in the long term.

It’s not always easy to make changes to everyday behaviour like the addition or modification of physical activity. Our exercise physiologists are aware of this, and will assist with this process by helping to identify and work around the barriers to achieving your specific health or rehabilitation goals.

Where necessary, Exercise Physiologist can liaise with other medical and allied health providers such as surgeons, GPs, physiotherapists and dietitians to ensure we develop the most suitable and individualised exercise program for you, whilst also keeping them informed of your progress and ensuring you met your health goals.

When should I consider a Hydrotherapy exercise program?

With a heated deep water hydrotherapy pool onsite, our exercise physiologists are able to offer exercise physiology through the form of hydrotherapy. Performing an exercise program in a heated pool, provides health benefits particularly for patients whose injuries are easily aggravated with weight bearing activities.

The buoyancy of water reduces weight bearing impact on muscles and joints and allows our patients to remain active and conduct their exercise program in an environment that unloads their injuries/conditions.

Through reduced risk of injury aggravation, patients are able to increase their aerobic fitness, strength, and mobility. Where appropriate, our hydrotherapy exercise programs provide a graded progression from non-weight bearing to land based activity.

If you want to improve your health or want to return to full fitness following an injury,  call on (02) 4721 1222 to make an appointment. Our friendly reception team will make an appointment at a time that convenient to you. If you have been referred by your GP, specialist or insurance company, please bring your referral form and other medical documentation you feel may be necessary.

The lower limb class is designed for people who have recently had a major orthopaedic surgery or require an extensive rehabilitation protocol (for example, total knee replacements or total hip replacements).

The classes are aimed to improve the strength, range of movement, balance, control and function for your operated area and the overall lower limb.

Each class will begin with an assessment involving your operated limb as well as discussing any problems that you might have. Initially a physiotherapist will work with you individually and will discuss with you any goals you would like to achieve.

Each class will correspond with your treatment plan that your physiotherapist has prescribed, which will assist in getting you better quicker. The classes are a great way to meet people going through a similar recovery and work together to achieve your goals.
